Established in July 2003, the Independent Cinema Office is a national organisation that aims to develop and support independent film exhibition throughout the UK through activities including film programming advice and film bookings, touring programmes, artists’ moving image development, training and consultancy. They also organise events and festivals such as the London Children's Film Festival.

The ICO is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. It is governed by a board of trustees and has an advisory group comprising partners and stakeholders. The ICO is funded by the UK Film Council, the British Film Institute and Arts Council England.
